I know exactly what … I know exactly what you mean. It’s called muriadic acid, hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid. There are contractors who use this type of acid to etch designs in the concrete. If you were to leave a gel toilet bowl cleaner (as low as 9% hydrogen chloride) overnight in the grout lines, you’ll remove the grout completely. I know these things because I’m running a building services company for 10 years now.

Just remember this, … Just remember this, acid does not clean dirt. It etches away the grout that contains the stain. Using acid on grout will destroy the color and the grout will deteriorate and fall apart. Don’t believe me? Put a piece of cured grout in the acid that you claim is a cleaner. Leave it overnight. Take a look at it the next day and see if it is still there. Probably gone. What does that tell you?

phosphoric acid is … phosphoric acid is still acid. As is sulfamic. Dirt on the grout line is acidic. You need to use an alkaline cleaner to clean acid stains. Read my former post! Great thing about the internet. You an make up stuff and claim to be an expert. I own a cleaning company that cleans grout every day. I am also a certified instructor that teaches grout, tile and stone cleaning.

You have to use … You have to use phosphoric acid (Betco MAD) to clean regular sanded grout, that works best on that type of grout. Epoxy mix grout need to be cleaned with a solvent based alkaline detergent such as Spartan SC-200. There is also an acid used in our drinking water supply called Fluorosilicic acid. This acid is an industrial waste and is a neurotoxin–it’s supposed to give you strong teeth, but all you get later on in life is disintegrating hip bones/skeleton and a less capable intellect.

Might want to take … Might want to take a chemistry lesson. Acids are for cleaning minerals and alkaline cleaners are for removing dirt, soil and fatty acids. Using any type of acid on grout will eventually remove the color and cause it to look splotchy. Acid etches grout.
