What is a reasonable amount to pay my friend to install Pergo floors? My condo is around 800 sq. ft.
How easy is it to install a chair rail and wainscoting?
Last question, can I do this all myself? I have no carpentry/power tools experience…
for the floor install i would say a going rate for a contractor is $25-$30 per hour…if he knows what he/she knows whatthey are doing then it should take no longer than 4-6 hrs to install the floor…
chair rail…all you need are "finishing nails, hammer, nail set, liquid nail, paintable wood filler/caulk"….you may also want to get a stud finder….basically find the studs…and put a "bead" of liquid nail on the back of the chair rail length and then place it at the hieght you want..remember to have a level also…then nail the chair rail into the wall at the stud locations..be carefu not to hammer the nails too far in you may damage the chair rail….use your nail set to sink the nail just below the chair rail surface and then use the wood filler/caulk to fill the holes where the nails are….then it is ready to paint….same with the wainscoating…
yes you can do it yourself….you may want to leave the pergo to the friend though it can get tough leveling the floor and matching corners and thresholds…

I am about to have a general contractor perform services for me (tile in kitchen, wood flooring, wallpaper removal). He told me that there is no contract to sign, and that we both can sign the proposal he has given me to act as a contract.
I trust the guy, as a trustworthy friend of mine recommended him, but what do I need to do to protect myself?
Is there a simple contract I can draw up to ask him to sign? Where can I find it?
Thank you.
I would tell him that you don’t feel comfortable moving forward without a contract. He should respect that and draw one up for you. If not, then you may want to try to find a different contractor. It may be find without one, but if problems arise, a contract might make things much easier to resolve.

I have heard of compound miter saws, chop saws, table saws, etc. We have finish work to do from the walls out in basement, attic, garage and room over garage, and repair and renovation in the rest of the house. What shall we purchase rather than rent by the day or week?
It depends on level of detail in the work. If you have some framing demo to do, a reciprocating saw is a must. If you have basic trim to do a miter saw is a must. High quality millwork requires a table saw. Many times I prefer a jigsaw over a circular saw in trim work, where more practical than a miter saw or table saw.
A table saw or band saw is more versatile, but a miter saw is more practical in basic trim work.
My suggestion is if your trim work is rather basic, casing and baseboard, and you don’t plan on doing really big trim over 4 or 5", get a decent not too expensive miter saw 12" blade. Then look for a second hand reciprocating saw at pawn shop. And third priory would be nice second hand table saw. Brand new isn’t always better with table saws. I’ve seen auctions where you can get an old table saw like a Powermatic for cheaper than a new Craftsman. If you are familiar with the brands, you know the old Powermatic is superior to the new Craftsman.
