I am trying to build an interrogation room a few stories underground… For the peace and quiet, you know.

Any suggestions for add-ons and primitive devices of, um, information gathering? I really am not into high-tech gadgets of sophistication, like lie-detectors… I am able to detect the truth through the octave of pitch. Anyway, suggestions are welcome.

Ah I like ze idea with ze interrogation chamber will zere be cuffs and cotton for muffling?

What is a reasonable amount to pay my friend to install Pergo floors? My condo is around 800 sq. ft.

How easy is it to install a chair rail and wainscoting?

Last question, can I do this all myself? I have no carpentry/power tools experience…

for the floor install i would say a going rate for a contractor is $25-$30 per hour…if he knows what he/she knows whatthey are doing then it should take no longer than 4-6 hrs to install the floor…

chair rail…all you need are "finishing nails, hammer, nail set, liquid nail, paintable wood filler/caulk"….you may also want to get a stud finder….basically find the studs…and put a "bead" of liquid nail on the back of the chair rail length and then place it at the hieght you want..remember to have a level also…then nail the chair rail into the wall at the stud locations..be carefu not to hammer the nails too far in you may damage the chair rail….use your nail set to sink the nail just below the chair rail surface and then use the wood filler/caulk to fill the holes where the nails are….then it is ready to paint….same with the wainscoating…

yes you can do it yourself….you may want to leave the pergo to the friend though it can get tough leveling the floor and matching corners and thresholds…

I had to have a plumbing co. come out to fix a back problem but come to find out the problem isn’t located on my property. It starts where the line goes under the "city owned" street and comes back up to attach to the sewer lines. my house was built in 1970 and I think was one of the first few in the neighborhood.

Check your city, county, and state websites, there are grants available for homeowners. In this particular case, you need to get the city involoved to repair the problem.

Building codes were relaxed in the 1970s and 1980s and alot of "corners were cut" that are causing problems today.

Los Angeles is considering if they should make it a law that any home improvement center over 100,000 sq ft will have to build a shelter with air conditcioning and rest rooms for the illegal aliens to hang out looking for work. How stupid can this be? I am not a rasist but exactly what are we saying by doing this?

This is just another example whereby American Citizens have no control over what the Mexicans do in the USA.

I cannot imagine Home Depo/Walmart is a happy camper about any of this! Since when does doing something ILLEGAL gain you squatters right’s status paid for by taxpayers??

They only want to BE in America, NOT BE AMERICANS!

I know that clearing the snow off is the easiest way to prevent them. I’m trying to think of home-improvement type things that will prevent them from forming as well. For example, I’m thinking that making sure there is enough insulation in the attic, especially near the soffet (sp?) and upgrading our windows to energy star ones might help. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

Be careful adding insulation near the soffit, you don’t want to cover up any soffit vents.

The key is insulation AND ventilation. Ice dams usually occur because heat escapes your home up through the attic, warming the underside of the roof deck. This melts the snow and the water runs down the roof. When the water reaches the eaves of your roof, which are outside of your walls and have no heat under them, the water freezes. This happens continually, building up the ice dam. Ideally you want the underside of your roof deck to be as close to the outside temperature as possible. A good bed of insulation on the floor of the attic along with a vapor barrier is a good start. Then you need a balanced ventilation system. you want intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge. There are websites with calculators to help you figure out how much you need. If you need a warm attic and your insulation needs to go in the Rafters, make sure to use foam spacers to prevent the insulation from closing off the air channel near the soffits. In the winter months you’ll most likely be able to get a great deal from a roofing contractor to do the work.

Insulate, and Ventilate and your good to go.
