I am looking to do a remodel and possibly a home addition on a home I have lived in the past 10 years. Does anyone know of a reliable business or a way to find a reliable company that is the Raleigh/Cary/Apex, NC area?

http://www.nari.org/level2/homeowners/.. try this site.

I am planning on doing a major revnovation to an old home, new basement, new roof, remodel interior down to the studs, new flooring, walls cabinets, etc… Am i required to have the remodel totally inspected by a building inspector? or because its a home renovation its not required?

you are going to have to get permits and more than one inspection ex after electrical but before sheet rock is installed

Not talking about crazy million dollar ones just normal people renovations?

Go to web sites for local contractors. The good ones are pleased to show before and after pictures.

My 1947 CA home had a major remodel 10 years ago by the previous owner (added 400 sq ft to the back). My question is, would they have been required to retrofit the foundation on the existing portion up to modern code? I know I can’t assume anything, but what is typically done?

Side question: About how much is it to get a foundation inspection to see how much earthquake retrofit is needed.

Thanks for your help.

You should contact the building inspector for your township/county. Each area goes by different codes. It doesn’t cost you anything for him to come out and look WITH you. (or it shouldn’t) Call and ask, then make an appointment or speak with him/her directly.

I need to learn ASAP everything I can about Home Remodeling and Improvements. Especially Sunrooms, construction, design, how to build, prepare estimates. Also need a EASY BEGINNER FREE package to use on computer, like Four Seasons Sunrooms give their sales reps. Can go out and take a digital picture, then somehow transfer it to your computer, the home comes up and you can design the sunroom right there to see what the home will look like with a sunroom on it.

Tons on information at the library.

I am very capable but this home is very old. They are pre-dry wall. There are holes in the roof and leaks everywhere. I don’t need a contractor as much as I need clear instructions. I mean it is not raining in the living room, but I think they have neglected it too long. There may be structural damage. Especially to the roof. Most contractor’s only cover the roof and so far few actually repair the roof. I live in the Philadelphia metro area which includes New Jersey and Delaware.

Sounds like one dangerous roof to walk on! Don’t do it! Call a roofing company. They’re all capable of full repair. You’ll want it stripped so that all rot is exposed and then replaced……. and the new roof lays well. When it comes to shingles, there are different weights that last varying numbers of years……….get the heavy weights! Otherwise, you’ll be reroofing in 16 years. Labor is the same for light or heavy.

I want hardwood floors, so I went to the 2 popular home improvement stores in Chicago (H.D and Lws). One had a very limited selection of hardwood floors and both were outrageous when it came to price. Is there any place in Chicago that is cheaper?

HOBO’s has a big selection of flooring at a discount price. There is one in Crest Hill (near Joliet)
